Canadian nurse educator recognized for her simulation pedagogical expertise

Sentinel U®, a provider of web-based simulation education technology solutions for nursing schools, hospital systems and healthcare professionals, has presented its second annual Simulation Star Award to Sufia Turner, RN, MN, CCSNE. The award recognizes the nation’s most influential and impactful nurse educator.

During Healthcare Simulation Week, the nursing community voted for one of three nursing instructor finalists who were chosen earlier this year. Turner was selected from the finalists, which included University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) Simulation Lab Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Nursing Jana Wheeler, DNP, APRN, CHSE and Dean of Nursing at Angeles College in California Sasha Rarang, PhD, MSN, CCM, RN.

The instructor and simulation program lead at the University of Manitoba College of Nursing (CON) in Canada was recognized by her peers for her contributions to the advancement of simulation through practice and research.

“It’s amazing to see the outstanding ways in which nurse educators are keeping simulation and healthcare education moving forward,” said Jeffrey Caplan, president of Sentinel U. “Sufia Turner exemplifies passion and dedication as an instructor. We are honored to recognize her for the valuable work she does to promote and improve the simulation experience.”

Turner’s nomination described her as a simulation education advocate who is instrumental in developing CON’s innovative program. A gifted and collaborative educator, Turner is committed to creating a positive learning environment and ensuring students are ready for clinical practice. Her creative approach to simulation is built on evidence gathered through the rigorous review of theoretical and empirical literature.

She is also credited with co-leading the implementation of a provincial pilot project that provided the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba with evidence to support the replacement of 25 percent of clinical practice with simulation. Turner’s concept analysis describing the key attributes of psychologically safe debriefing environments was heralded by Clinical Simulation in Nursing as the “Non-Research Article of the Year,” while The Society for Simulation in Healthcare recognized it as an “Article of Influence.”

“Ms. Turner not only uses teaching strategies informed by research, but she also generates the research that informs such strategies,” wrote CON Associate Professor Nicole Harder, PhD, RN, in her nomination letter. “Her thesis work addressed a gap in the empirical literature about the perceptions of psychological safety in simulation from the perspective of undergraduate nursing students.”

As Sentinel U’s 2022 Simulation Star of the Year winner, Turner will receive an award and a Sentinel U Leadership Simulation Bundle to help in her development as a leader in nursing. The bundle includes training in Interprofessional Teams, Nursing Quality Indicators® , and Patient Management and Delegation®.
